Turning 30

Next year I will be 30 years old *gulp*

Early days I know, but I'm thinking about what I want to do for my 30th birthday. It's kind of hard because I have no idea what my financial situation will be next year given that my job contract will likely end in December. On the other hand I am underpaid compared to most people in my line of work so when I find a new job chances are I'll be on more money. Just depends whether I wind up having to commute to another town, which is looking likely.

Anyway, I digress. What did you do on your 30th? I'm thinking it might be nice to go away somewhere but I'm not sure where I want to go or what I want to do.

Looking for suggestions.

I'm turning 30 this year and me and the hub debated on where we should go to celebrate. It started out as somewhere not to distant (I'm in the UK) like Amsterdam, and then kinda grew. Now we're off to Tokyo for a week in April for my birthday. Pretty sweet. We've been to Japan before and both love it immensely so it made perfect sense to go back there for my birthday. There's a chance we'll be able to meet up with my Bro in law if he's still teaching in Japan too.

hope you think of something cool to do!

That's really cool. I live in the UK too but I think maybe Japan is a bit far. LOL!

I threw a party in this historical house nearby that's rented out for parties. As bday gifts, Mom paid the rent for the house, Dad paid for the food (taco pie with salad buffet, and cookies and cake after), and my sister made it for me.

That's really cool. I don't think I want a big party or anything though. It'll only remind me how old I am ;)

I think 30 or so people showed up (during the entire day), so it wasn't big or anything.

30 is a lot by my standards. LOL! I don't think I even know 30 people (outside of LJ). LOL!

I'm lucky if I get 10 for my little gatherings

I feel like a dinosaur now...with aches and pains fit for an old lady like me. ;-þ

Why? Because I don't know loads of people? That doesn't make me evil, just sad and pathetic ;)

Because you said "30 is a lot"! ;-þ

Hey, it's not like I know loads of people either. They usually know me! *g*

You really don't want to know what I was doing on my 30th birthday. Was not happy, even if I was looking forward to it.

Ohhhhh I loved* my 30th.
It was a weekend long Murder Mystery filled event! The Friday of my birthday I went with 4 friends up to Spicer Castle in Northern Minnesota for an official Murder Mystery dinner and overnight in a whirlpool/fireplace room.

Saturday we drove back to Minneapolis where we headed over to my friend's house for dinner and a Murder Mystery game called "Mystery in the Library". 30 (yes I said 30) of my closest friends became library characters such as: Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood, Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella (that was me!), Goldilocks, Little Red Riding Hood, Pinocchio, Aladdin, Dracula, Peter Pan, etc. etc. And with my friends things got strange - as in Peter Pan 40 years later (a drunken, bitter old man/boy), or Alice in Wonderland - covered in blood wielding a knife, or Gay Robin Hood.

So yeah - I'm a murder mystery geek and that was the absolute perfect weekend/party for me! (Oh and I had a Lord of the Rings Birthday Cake too - could it get any more geeky?)

Hee! That sounds like a lot of fun! I think I'd like to do something really geeky but maybe just something like get drunk and watch all my favourite films and TV episodes *g*

I don't remember. It was so long ago.

You baby.

LOL!!!

I'm not sure whether to be flattered or not ;)

Oh, be flattered. Age is no big deal anyway. It's when you stop aging you have to worry.

Shahrukh came today, and he's beautiful. Thanks so much. I put him in the other outfit in the box, because my daughter said the one he came in made him look like a Backstreet Boy.

LOL!!! Wow, that actually took a lot less than I thought. I only mailed him a week ago. Glad he made it there safe :)

Since me and my friend Naomi turned 30 in the same year we held a big party at about the halfway point, invited everyone we knew - got drunk, stoned and danced the night away.

I was living in Norway with my husband and we didn't really celebrate as we didn't know many people. So we had a par-tay on our own ;)

My 40th was the BIG party and we had a line dancing part which was a hoot (everyone was a novice so we all made mistakes and crashed into each other).

If you want to travel how about somewhere like Amsterdam? That's a nice place to visit. You can hop on the ferry... :)

Hmm...I've never really thought about Amsterdam as a place to visit. Is it nice?

It is nice - very unusual architecture and the canal cruises are very interesting. If you like art there are some fantastic museums and some very famous paintings. There are also the diamond dealers which I found fascinating.

The plus side is that everyone speaks really good English too, so getting around is dead easy.

It's a good place to go for a long weekend and not too expensive.

I'm taking comfort in the fact that i will be 29 next year.
Haven't really thought much about my 30th- so many life plans have screwed up- the list of "things to do by the age of 30" is lying in pieces lookng largely like none of it will get done!
But i think a party is in order- with lots of drinking and maybe some costumes! If you liked the murder mysetery idea, we can do something similar- scaled down a bit of course.

We'll always be 17 in my mind!

Hee! I'm not sure about the murder mystery thing but something fun is definitely in order

30 was sooooo long ago. And only wish I'd had a clue about fandom then.

If I were you...I'd spend it in Costa Rica having hot, dirty monkey sex with Michael Rosenbaum...

seriously...it is a good year.

anyway, I celebrated for a week...I had something different planned for each day, leading up to my big "party" on Saturday (although I had three people show up for the "party" party...my mom, my brother, and one friend...sigh...that sucked) -- but the rest of the week was great....a night of bowling, a day at the ren fair, a drive-in movie, a night club night, -- dang I can't remember the others. It was a while ago...but big fun!!!

Unfortunately, I can't give you any advice because I don't even know how I'm supposed to celebrate my 24th birthday... *scratches head* But in any case, I'd love to visit you for your birthday, no matter what you end up planning. :D

*snuggles*
